Watch Care Guide
Watch Care Guide
A fine watch rewards good care. Follow these general guidelines to keep your timepiece looking and performing at its best. If in doubt, consult a qualified watchmaker, as care needs vary by brand and model.
Everyday handling
Avoid knocks and drops, and take your watch off before activities that involve heavy impact. Keep it away from strong magnetic fields — such as speakers, laptops, tablets and magnetic clasps — as magnetism can affect accuracy in mechanical watches.
Water resistance
Water resistance ratings describe performance when the watch is new and its seals are intact; they are not permanent. Never operate the crown or pushers underwater, and ensure the crown is fully closed (or screwed down) before contact with water. Have seals checked periodically, especially if you swim or shower with your watch.
Cleaning
Wipe the case and bracelet with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. For water-resistant watches with a metal bracelet, a soft brush with mild soapy water can help remove residue — keep the crown closed and avoid leather straps. Dry thoroughly afterwards.
Storage
Store your watch in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, ideally in a watch box or pouch. If you own several watches, a watch box or winder helps protect them and keeps automatics running.
Winding and power reserve
Automatic watches wind through the motion of your wrist; if left unworn they will stop and need restarting. Manual-wind watches should be wound regularly, ideally at the same time each day. Avoid winding or setting the date late at night on many watches, as the date mechanism may be engaged.
Servicing
To preserve accuracy and water resistance, mechanical watches benefit from periodic servicing by a qualified watchmaker. Intervals vary by brand and model. See our Warranty & Servicing page for more.
What to avoid
- Strong magnets and electronic devices
- Sudden temperature changes and prolonged direct sunlight
- Perfume, solvents and chemicals, which can damage seals and straps
- Operating the crown or pushers when the watch is wet
